One-of-a-Kind South African RingWe’ve been taught to evaluate an object by what it’s made of, the label it carries, or the price attached to it.
Material establishes one kind of value. Design
establishes another.
The most compelling objects bring the two together.
As a curator, I’m interested in the relationship between material and design.
I look for pieces where the material isn’t simply beautiful, but essential to the design itself.
Whether it’s horn, wood, lucite, or resin, the question is never whether the material has value. What matters is how the material serves the design.
When material and design are in harmony, an object becomes more than the sum of its parts. Proportion, restraint, and thoughtful design are what give it presence. Those qualities cannot be measured by material alone.
What we curate isn’t simply a selection of jewelry. It’s a point of view.
Every piece is chosen because it strengthens the Edit.
